The Fight Centre – Brisbane runs kids kickboxing and muay thai classes with a strong emphasis on discipline and mutual respect between the trainers and students.
With the gaining popularity of UFC and Kickboxing amongst adults, it’s no surprise that kids are taking an interest in learning martial arts as well. The sport is great for children in many ways. Boys get to mimic the fighters they see on TV (who look much like their action figurines), in a safe and controlled environment, and girls develop a confidence in their own abilities to defend themselves.
Kids Muay Thai classes are run by Australian champion Ben Johnston, who holds a blue card and has all the experience necessary to handle a large group of children. Kids classes are for boys and girls aged 5 – 12 years and require no previous experience. The gym has some spare protective equipment for your child to use while deciding if they enjoy it, so nothing is required for his/her first class! Parents are welcome to stay and watch the classes take place.
“As trainers, and fighters, we must constantly be aware of what example we are setting for our students, especially our younger ones. In our kids’ Muay Thai classes, we make an effort to keep things fun and interesting, but we also provide structure and supervision so that the fun doesn’t turn into mischief. Since teaching and fighting is not only our job but also our hobby, our trainers have no interest in standing in front of our students’ kids and barking orders. We have found that with encouragement and positive re-enforcement, the kids are far more likely to respond to what we teach. This way, on the rare occasion that a voice needs to be raised, the kids know that we are serious and mean business! We hope to have as much fun teaching them, as they have learned, and this results in a great atmosphere during the lessons!”
