The Monthly Catch-Up: August 2020

Welcome to the Newest Member of the TFC Family!

The Fight Centre is proud to announce that we now offer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)! We kicked off with a bang on August 4th, with a full class of 40 people. We are also excited to welcome a new member to our all-star coaching staff – Icaro Sandes, a Brown Belt from the school of Southside BJJ. Make sure to say ‘hello’ the next time you see him!

Running Tuesday and Thursday nights from 7:30 – 9pm, our first month of classes are Gi-optional. If you are considering purchasing a GI, we’ve got you covered! With a full range of sizes and colours, to make sure you’re fit is on point. And make sure to keep an eye out for some other TFC BJJ gear coming down the pipeline soon…

Whether you’re looking to learn a new martial art, find a new way to develop your fitness and agility or improve your self-defence abilities, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu really does it all. The best part is, the majority of our students are all starting from the same place – so there really is no better time to get started! As always, booking-in is essential – for more information on our booking process, click here.

We’ve also got some resources available if you have questions about what Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu involves –  check out our recent article comparing BJJ with Muay Thai, what to expect on your first day, essential etiquette and, for the guys, we’ve also covered some key questions and concerns about protecting your most prized possessions.

Confessions of a Muay-Thai-aholic

Travis Cromhout is no stranger to ‘The Monthly Catch-Up’, having featured twice before (check them out here and further below). In addition to submitting amazing ‘wins’ to ‘The Monthly Catch-Up’, Travis has also taken the time to reflect on his journey at TFC over the past six months. His reflection highlights some key insights he has gleaned on joining a fight gym, his interactions with other members and coaches and the progress he has made with his own physical and mental health.

But there are no spoilers here! Head here to check the article out for yourself.

Major Key: How to Defend Yourself 101

At The Fight Centre, we aim to teach our members how to defend themselves – whether that’s in the ring, or in streets. While knowing how to throw a head kick or spinning heel kick may make for a cool TikTok video, it’s unlikely to serve as smart or effective self-defence strategy.

So what are the important tools to keep ready in the toolbox?

We’ve come up with some tips and techniques to help you develop a sound self-defence strategy, if the need ever arises.

Check out the article here.

All We Do is Win, Win, Win…

Each month, we use this part of ‘The Monthly Catch-Up’ to celebrate the wins of our amazing TFC Community. Reflecting on and celebrating our wins helps us to remember where we’ve come from and the progress we’ve made. Far from being a self-indulgent exercise, it helps build and re-affirm our self-belief in what we can achieve.  Over the past few months, we have loved hearing about the progress our members are making towards their life goals.

Name: Travis Cromhout

Win:  I have made it to the Fighters’ Group, alongside a couple of mates, and I am so stoked! This is such a big win for me because it feels like all my hard work is paying off and I’m so keen for all there is to learn on the road ahead.

Name: Aaron Carroll

Win: I have a couple wins. First, I have just become part of the Fighters’ Group. This is a win for me because I would like to fight in the future and making the Fighter’s Group has been something I have been working towards for the past six months. Second, I’ve been able to find time to join the new Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes, which is a win because it’s a martial art I’ve long wanted to try and now I can do all my martial arts training in one place!

Thank you to Aaron and Travis for your submissions and congratulations on joining the Fighters’ Group! If you would like to submit your win, please contact us!
