  • Do I need boxing shoes

If you’re just starting out on your boxing journey, then any kind of sports shoe will suffice. Unless it’s explicitly stated by the boxing gym that you’re joining, you’ll be fine with any type of athletic footwear. Keep in mind though. Grip and comfortability are a few important things to consider when selecting which footwear to wear to your boxing class.

To ensure the safety of yourself and others, it’s best to wear shoes that you can reliably move around in that won’t cause any slips or trips.  Make sure your footwear is comfortable as they’ll be getting put through their paces!

If you’re ready to buy boxing shoes, they can range anywhere between $70 – $300.  As mentioned above though, if you’re just starting out then clean, comfortable sports shoes of anytype will work fine.

  • What are handwraps for

Hand wraps are used for 2 things.  First and foremost they’re used to add structural integrity to your hands during training.  Think of them like reinforcements for your joints while you’re hitting that heavy bag or working on contact drills with your partner. Secondly, they’re great for keeping your hands and gloves from smelling like a dirty sock post training.

If you’re training regularly, then you’ll want to take care of your hands and gloves.  Hand wraps are arguably the easiest investment you can make when calculating the cost of boxing lessons.  They can help prevent injury and promote good hygiene. Check out this Hand wrap tutorial from TFC Head Trainer Mitch.

Hand wraps generally come in 2 sizes:

    • 120 inches (roughly 3 metres)
    • 180 inches (roughly 4.5 metres).

For adults we recommend the 180 inch length as it will provide more support.  120 inch hand wraps are more suited for youths and boxers with smaller hands.

  • What else will I need

Let’s recap the essentials we’ve covered above:

    • Gym membership
    • Boxing gloves
    • Boxing shoes (optional)
    • Hand Wraps

So what else will you need to start your journey into the world of boxing?

Once you start to get a little more serious, you’ll definitely want to invest in a good quality mouthguard. Mouthguards are an effective investment from as low as $10 that will offer protection for any drills that require contact eg. sparring

Aside from that, there are a few additional costs you may want to consider. The question ‘How much does a boxing lesson cost’ only covers what you do INSIDE the gym.  There are a few things OUTSIDE the gym that will need some attention as you get deeper into your training.  Nutrition and recovery (massage etc) are things that will help keep you performing to your max potential as you progress through the sport.

While not essential at the very beginning of your journey, it’s worth noting for the future when your training ramps up.

  • Final Thoughts
